Sydney Trains - Petersham Station

BRIEF

The Inner West Council established the Perfect Match initiative to help deter unwanted graffiti by fostering legitimate art in public spaces, including the Petersham Station underpass.

SOLUTION

Vantagspace, Sydney Trains, the Inner West Council, and leading Australian urban artists embarked on a partnership to brighten up the Petersham Station tunnel and deter graffiti. A colourful, street art mural, that stretches along the walls of the Petersham station underpass is the result.

The artwork includes motifs to symbolise the Sydney Trains network, and repeated geometric patterns derived from aerial photographs of the railway tracks.

Given Petersham Station has exceptional State significance, with its original structures dating from the 1880s, extreme care was taken to ensure the heritage site retained its aesthetic quality and integrity.

Vantagespace collaborated with contractors and service trades to ensure the environment was cleaned in readiness for the new artwork, access equipment was provided to the artists, and closure of the tunnel to pedestrians for a period of 4 weeks was safely managed.

The incredible artwork was revealed and praised by the community in a special ceremony hosted by the Inner West Council.
